Complete Regeneration were appointed to deliver the enabling works on Cornwall St, Birmingham which included removal of an external curtain walling system from all elevations, internal demolition, strip-out works and demolition of the front-entrance on the £14m project.
The team commenced with the removal of the external curtain walling system which was carefully dismantled with operatives working from a hydraulic boom access platform. A remote operated Brokk demolition machine was brought in to break out the concrete upper ground flooring alongside the entrance steps. The entrance canopy was demolished by the team using cutting equipment. Ongoing works in other areas included removal of window cleaning cradles, clearing of roof areas, cutting back and removal of ‘nib’ features to all elevations and stripping out M&E. The works were segregated into mini-projects with Site Supervisors overseeing each activity as the works were carried out concurrently.
The project posed a number of challenges one being the restrictions of movements within the confines of the allocated space outside the building due to the city centre location. Another challenge was the working at height, dismantling the external glass panels safely alongside a busy city centre thoroughfare with pedestrians and traffic below.
